Wakisa Ministries was born out of Mrs. Vivian Kityo’s vision and passion for young women with unwanted pregnancies in Uganda, through her work with Youth for Christ. It grew to embrace other young people traumatized by war and civil strife throughout the Great Lakes Region.
Many girls with unplanned pregnancies are rejected and abandoned by their families. They become desperate, depressed and often consider an abortion as a way out of their predicament. Those who choose to keep their babies are often left to provide for their newborns, without help from family or the boy or man that was responsible for the pregnancy.
The primary focus of Wakisa Ministries is the physical, emotional, social and spiritual health of the girls, young mothers and their babies. One of the strategies to deliver care was the establishment of a crisis pregnancy centre within the suburbs of the Kampala that would provide support services to girls with unplanned pregnancies and equip them with life skills.
The Vision – A generation of young people, free from the trauma of early sexual behavior or war, living with the hope of a brighter future through the Gospel of Christ.
Our vision also includes expanding our services to care for 50 girls at any one time, rather than our current capacity of 25. To do this, we need to build a new facility, called “Wakisa House”, on land that has already been acquired. Plans have already been drawn up and include well-furnished rooms where classes in cookery, tailoring, computing, handcrafts and candle making can be conducted. Other facilities also include a proper dining room and, of course, dormitories. At the moment, training and dining activities are conducted in a multi-purpose tent.
These facilities will also allow us to run training courses for other girls who have dropped out of school, had their babies but cannot return to school – they would be taught skills that would enable them to earn a living for themselves and their child.
This new home would be a place where the lives of vulnerable youth could be truly transformed!
The Mission – To provide love, care, shelter and counseling support to traumatized youth, mainly young girls with unwanted pregnancies and young people traumatized by war.

In July 2010, Wakisa was visited by 25 ladies from around Africa who were attending a conference. The girls sang the Wakisa Anthem to then – we thought you may enjoy seeing and hearing the result!
Brenda came to Wakisa a couple of years ago and loves to compose songs. She wrote this welcome song for the whole Wakisa Community.
In January 2009, The Journey Church in Sydney, Australia, ran some moonlight movies for their local community. Before the movies started, they also ran this short promotional video to inform them of this great work and provide an opportunity for them to be involved.
